May 17: World Hypertension Day — “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”

Every year on May 17, the world observes World Hypertension Day. This year’s theme — “Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, and live longer” — reminds us that high blood pressure (Hypertension or HTN) is not a minor issue; it is a silent killer.

The Risks of High Blood Pressure

Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and other serious complications. Therefore, regularly checking your blood pressure, staying informed, and leading a healthy lifestyle are essential.

Advice for Controlling and Preventing Hypertension:

Measure Your Blood Pressure Regularly: Check your blood pressure at least once a month. If you have HTN, monitor it frequently under your doctor’s guidance.

Reduce Salt Intake: Limit daily salt intake to less than 5 grams. Excessive salt raises blood pressure.

Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and low-fat foods. Avoid fried and processed foods.

Exercise Regularly: Walk or engage in light physical activity for at least 30 minutes every day. It helps control blood pressure.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: These habits increase blood pressure and raise the risk of heart disease.

Manage Stress: Practice meditation, prayer, listening to calm music, or reading to reduce mental stress.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight increases the risk of HTN.

Follow Medical Advice: If diagnosed with hypertension, take prescribed medications regularly and keep up with follow-up appointments.

Final Words

Hypertension is preventable and controllable — if we stay aware, measure our blood pressure regularly, and adopt a healthy lifestyle. On this World Hypertension Day, let us become aware and help others become aware too.

Stay well, stay healthy, and live long.
